Label printing guide
Print a sticker for the box as you list each item: the item number in big type, the start of the title, and a QR code that opens the item. Put the item on the shelf, and find it by item number at pickup or shipping.
On an iPhone or iPad? Apple doesn’t let websites use Bluetooth, so printing straight to a Bluetooth label printer needs Chrome or Edge on a laptop, a Chromebook or an Android phone or tablet. On iPhone, tap Print label and print through the print window to an AirPrint label printer, or let a laptop be your label station. Details under iPhone and iPad.
How it works
You scan or photograph an item in Scan to list. The moment it’s saved, its label prints. Two ways to print:
- From the phone or computer you list on, straight to a Bluetooth label printer. Works in Chrome or Edge on Android phones, Windows, Mac and Chromebooks.
- From a label station: a laptop or tablet next to the printer, with Auktia’s Label station page open. It prints a label for everything anyone on your team lists, from any phone, iPhones included.
Each label prints once, even if both are set up. You can reprint any label.
Android phone, or a laptop with Chrome or Edge
- Turn the label printer on, with labels loaded.
- In Auktia, open an auction and tap Scan to list, then the printer button at the top.
- Choose Print on my Bluetooth printer, tap Connect a Bluetooth printer, and pick your printer from the list.
- Pick your label size and tap Test print.
- Scan items. Each label prints as the item is saved.
The browser remembers the printer. If the printer goes to sleep, Auktia reconnects on the next label, or tap Reconnect.
iPhone and iPad
Why it’s different: Apple doesn’t let websites in Safari use Bluetooth. Apps you download can; Auktia runs in the browser. Three ways around it, best first:
- Use a label station (easiest, no taps). Put any laptop, or an Android tablet, next to the printer and set it up as a label station. On your iPhone, in Scan to list, tap the printer button and choose A label station prints it. List as usual; each label prints by itself a second later.
- Use the Bluefy browser. Bluefy is a free browser in the App Store that allows Bluetooth. Open www.auktia.com in Bluefy (not Safari), sign in, and connect the printer as on Android above. It works with printers that use Bluetooth Low Energy, which is most newer label printers; some older printers, including many Zebra QLn models, can’t connect this way.
- Use an AirPrint label printer. Printers the iPhone can print to over Wi-Fi (for example the Rollo Wireless, or a Brother QL model with AirPrint; check your model) work through the iPhone’s print screen. Tap Print label on each item, then Print. One tap per label.
Set up a label station
- On the laptop or tablet next to the printer, sign in to Auktia with your seller account and open My auctions → Label station.
- Choose how it prints: Bluetooth label printer, Zebra on USB, or This computer’s printers. Connect, and tap Test print.
- Press Start and leave the page open. It prints a label for every item your team lists from then on.
Importing a spreadsheet or dropping in a folder of photos can create hundreds of items at once. The station asks before printing more than 10 at a time, so you can print them all or skip them.
Zebra printers (QLn, ZQ, ZD and others)
- Zebras with Bluetooth Low Energy connect like any Bluetooth printer. Auktia speaks Zebra’s printer language automatically.
- Zebras that pair only by classic Bluetooth (many QLn320s) can’t connect to a browser by Bluetooth. Plug the Zebra into a laptop with its USB cable instead, install Zebra Browser Print (free, from Zebra), and set the Zebra as its default printer. Then open the Label station, choose Zebra on USB, tap Find my Zebra and press Start. If the browser asks to let auktia.com reach devices on this computer, allow it.
- After loading a new roll, calibrate the Zebra so labels line up (on most models: hold the feed button until it flashes, then let go).
Any printer on a computer
A label printer installed on a Windows or Mac computer (with its driver) prints through the normal print window. In the Label station choose This computer’s printers, pick the label printer and your label’s paper size once.
To print without the print window each time, start Chrome in kiosk-printing mode, with the label printer as the computer’s default printer:
- Mac: quit Chrome, open Terminal and run
open -a "Google Chrome" --args --kiosk-printing - Windows: make a Chrome shortcut whose target ends with
chrome.exe" --kiosk-printing, and open Chrome from it.
Label size and printer language
- Sizes: 2″ × 1″, 2.25″ × 1.25″, 3″ × 2″ and 4″ × 6″. The size is on the roll’s box.
- Printer language: leave it on Automatic. Zebra printers use Zebra’s language (ZPL); most other label printers use TSPL. If a label prints as gibberish, pick the other one.
- Resolution: 203 dpi fits most printers. Choose 300 dpi only if your printer says 300.
These settings are kept on each device, so a phone and a label station can differ.
Questions
Which printers work?
Zebra printers, and most thermal label printers that speak TSPL: Munbyn, Xprinter, iDPRT, HPRT and many unbranded ones. Printers that only work with their maker’s own phone app (such as Phomemo, Niimbot or the Brother P-touch Cube) usually can’t take labels from a website. Use them through a computer’s print window if the maker has a computer driver.
Why can’t my iPhone find the printer?
Safari isn’t allowed to use Bluetooth. Use a label station, or open Auktia in the Bluefy browser. See iPhone and iPad.
What’s on the label?
The item number in big type (like #14), the start of the title, and a QR code. Scanning the QR code with Auktia’s scanner opens the item, for example to relist it.
Will a label print twice if my phone and a station are both set up?
No. Each item’s label prints once, on whichever device gets to it first. Print label on the item, or Reprint at the station, prints another copy whenever you want one.
I imported a spreadsheet. Will it print hundreds of labels?
Not without asking. The station stops and asks when more than 10 new items arrive at once.
Labels come out blank, cut off or as gibberish.
Check the label size and printer language in the printer settings. Blank labels on a thermal printer usually mean the roll is in upside down: the printable side faces the print head. On a Zebra, calibrate after loading a roll.
Do I need to reconnect the printer every time?
Usually not. Chrome remembers the printer, and Auktia reconnects when the next label prints. After a restart, tap Reconnect once.
