Auktia featuresWhy Do Auctions Require a Credit Card to Bid?
On Auktia, every bidder has a working card behind them so sellers (auction houses) know bids are real. You add it in Settings → Bidding on Stripe's secure page. It's checked with your bank; nothing is charged or held while you bid. When you win, it pays your invoice automatically after the auction ends (you can turn that off).
Why do auctions require a credit card to bid?
A bid is a promise to buy, and an auction only works if winners pay. When a winner walks away, the house loses the sale and the other bidders lose their shot at the lot. A card on file is how an online auction knows each paddle belongs to a real person.
On Auktia, every bidder has a working card behind them so sellers know bids are real. It also keeps auctions clean: accounts tied to the seller by the same device, card or address can't bid on its items (lots), which is how Auktia blocks shill bidding.
The rule holds even at cash-at-pickup auctions, where winners pay the seller in person. Bidders still add a card first, as Auktia's check that every bidder is real.
Will Auktia charge or hold my card?
Not while you bid. On Auktia the card is checked with your bank; nothing is charged or held while you bid. You type the number on Stripe's secure page, and Auktia keeps only the card's brand and last four digits.
When you win, the card pays your invoice automatically a few minutes after the auction ends, straight to the seller. Turn that off in Settings → Bidding and you get a pay link instead, to pay by card or bank/ACH where the seller offers it. Sellers who take payment at pickup (cash, check, Venmo, Zelle) don't charge it. Bidders pay Auktia nothing. The payment guide covers each method.
How do I add a card to bid on Auktia?
You do this once, before your first bid.
- Sign in with a one-time code sent to your email, or with Google.
- Open Settings → Bidding.
- Tap Add a card.
- Enter your card on Stripe's secure page. Auktia keeps only the brand and last four digits.
- Check Settings → Bidding, which shows how much of your bidding limit is in use.
- Find an item and place your first bid or max bid.
What is the $2,500 limit for new bidders?
A new bidder can have up to $2,500 in play at once: the max bids on items you're leading plus any unpaid wins. The limit lasts until you've paid an invoice online, and Settings → Bidding shows how much is in use.
Here's how it adds up. Say you lead two items with max bids of $1,200 and $800. That's $2,000 in use, leaving $500 for other bids. Max bids count because each one is a price you've agreed to pay if the bidding gets there.
Winning and not paying has its own cost. Unpaid wins pause your bidding, and from day 3 a seller can report non-payment, which pauses a no-show's bidding across Auktia. See what happens if you don't pay.
Is it safe to put a card on an auction site?
It's a fair question to ask before you hand any site a card. On Auktia, the number goes into Stripe's secure page, Auktia stores only the brand and last four, and nothing is charged or held while you bid. Money for wins goes straight to the seller: your card pays its invoice, or you pay by the methods each auction lists.
A few habits help on any auction site: pay only through the invoice or the methods the sale lists, read the buyer's premium and pickup terms before bidding, and remember that lots sell as is. On Auktia, if an item arrives materially different from its description, tell the seller and Auktia within 7 days; the seller resolves it and Auktia helps.

No. The card is checked with your bank; nothing is charged or held while you bid. When you win, it pays your invoice after the auction ends.
Can I bid at an online auction without a credit card?
Not on Auktia. Every bidder needs a working card before their first bid, even for auctions where winners pay cash at pickup.
Is the card on file used to pay for what I win?
Yes. It pays your invoice automatically a few minutes after the auction ends (you can turn that off in Settings). If that's off or the card is declined, you get a pay link. At pickup-only auctions, you pay the seller at pickup.

Unpaid wins pause bidding on Auktia. Open My bids, where what you owe sits at the top with Pay.
