Auction glossaryOpen Box Meaning: What You Get When You Buy Open Box
Open box means a product's original packaging has been opened, usually because it was returned, displayed or inspected, but the item itself is typically unused or barely used. It may be missing film, manuals or small accessories. In returns and auctions, open box sits between new and used as a condition grade.
Open box vs new vs used: what's the difference?
Condition grades tell you how much risk you're taking on.
- New: sealed in original packaging, never opened.
- Open box: packaging opened, item unused or lightly handled, may be incomplete.
- Used: clearly put to use, with wear to match.
- For parts: not working, or not known to work.
What should you check before bidding on open box?
Look for three things: whether every accessory is there, whether the item was tested, and whether it shows wear. A $300 blender missing its jar is a very different buy from one that was opened and reboxed. On Auktia, sellers (auction houses) mark each item new, open box, used, damaged or for parts, and tested or untested. Our guide to condition grades goes deeper.
Questions people ask
Is open box the same as refurbished?
No. Refurbished means it was repaired or checked and restored; open box only means the package was opened.
Can I return an open box item from an auction?
Usually not. Auction lots are sold as is, where is, so check the condition notes before you bid.
