Bidder's guideAuction Pickup: How Collecting Your Winning Lots Works
Auction pickup is when you collect the lots you won at the auction house's warehouse or the sale site, during set times after the sale closes. Pay your invoice first, bring your paddle number and ID, and arrive with the vehicle, help and tools to load. Lots left past the remove-by date may be forfeited.
How does auction pickup work?
Pickup is where online bidding meets the real world, and a little planning makes it quick. The usual sequence looks like this.
- Check the sale page for the pickup address, days and hours. Many sales offer one to three pickup windows in the days after closing.
- Pay your invoice online before you go, if the house allows it. Checkout at the door goes much faster.
- Arrive during the window with your paddle number, a photo ID and your invoice on your phone.
- Staff pull your lots or point you to them. Check each one against the invoice before you leave.
- Load and go. Many houses help carry small items; heavy items are often the buyer's job.
What is a remove-by date?
The remove-by date is the last day you can collect your lots. After it, terms commonly say unclaimed items are considered abandoned and may be resold or thrown away, often with no refund. Some houses charge a storage fee for late pickup instead.
Treat the date as firm. If you cannot make it, contact the house before the deadline, not after; many will work something out when asked early. Or send someone in your place.
Who loads auction items at pickup?
Plan to load yourself. Staff often help with boxes and small furniture, but houses commonly make loading the buyer's responsibility, and many will not lift heavy items because of injury risk. Equipment sales may have a forklift for pallets; check the terms instead of assuming.
For big lots, bring a second person, moving blankets, ratchet straps and a hand truck. Measure first: a 7-foot hutch will not fit in a midsize SUV, and you may not get extra time to come back with a truck. See what to bring to an auction pickup for a full list.
Can someone else pick up my auction items?
Usually yes. Tell the house ahead of time who is coming, and give that person your paddle number and invoice. Some houses want a written note or an email from the winning bidder. Paying online first means you never hand your card to someone else.
Some buyers hire a local mover or a pack-and-ship store to collect and send items for them. Confirm with the house that it releases lots to third parties before you book anyone.
How far should you drive for an auction pickup?
Do the math before you bid. A 90-mile round trip in a truck that gets 15 miles per gallon uses 6 gallons, about $18 at $3 a gallon, plus two or three hours of your day. That is fine for a $400 tool chest, not for a $15 box of kitchenware.
On Auktia, pickup items (lots) show their distance from you, and the near me page finds auctions close to home, so you can weigh the drive before you bid rather than after you win.
How do you make auction pickup quick?
Pickup days can be busy, with a line at the door and staff pulling lots for dozens of winners. A little preparation gets you in and out.
- Pay online beforehand so the door check is just your name and paddle number.
- Have your lot numbers listed in order, since that is how most warehouses shelve them.
- Come early in the window rather than in the last hour, when lines are longest.
- Bring a folding cart or hand truck for several small lots so you make one trip, not five.
- Clear your vehicle before you arrive. Measured cargo space is useless if it is full of groceries.
Questions people ask
What do I need to bring to auction pickup?
Your paddle number, ID and invoice, plus whatever it takes to move the item safely: a helper, straps, blankets and a vehicle it fits in.
How long do I have to pick up auction items?
It depends on the sale. Many give a few days after closing, and the remove-by date on the sale page is the deadline.
Can I pay at pickup?
Some houses take cash, check or card at the door. Others require online payment before pickup. The sale terms say which.
What if my item is missing at pickup?
Tell staff before you leave. Do not drive off without a clear answer, and get any refund or credit noted on your invoice.
Can I refuse an item at pickup?
Generally not because you changed your mind, since lots are sold as is and pickup is not a second preview. If an item is materially different from its description, raise it with the house right away.
