Auctions by categoryFurniture Auctions: How to Buy Furniture Online at Auction
Furniture auctions sell dressers, tables, sofas, bedroom sets and office pieces, often from estates, moves and store returns, and often well below retail. Judge construction from the photos, ask about smells and damage, measure your doorways, and budget for buyer's premium, tax and a truck. Most furniture is pickup only, so plan the move before you bid.

What furniture comes up at auction?
Estate auctions bring solid wood dressers, dining sets, china cabinets and the occasional mid-century piece. Moving and downsizing sales add sofas, recliners, bunk beds and patio sets. Liquidation sales bring new or open-box flat-pack furniture, office chairs and desks, sometimes still in the carton.
Office closings are another steady source: desks, filing cabinets, conference tables and task chairs, often sold as rows of identical pieces. If you need six matching chairs, a closing sale is where to look.
How do you judge furniture from auction photos?
Furniture is sold as is, so the photos and condition notes are your inspection. Look for shots of the back, the underside and an open drawer; they tell you more than the glamour shot.
- Dovetail joints on drawer corners usually mean solid construction; staples and glue usually mean a lighter build.
- Veneer over plywood is normal on good furniture. Lifting veneer is a repair job, and particleboard that has swelled from water rarely recovers.
- On upholstery, look for stains, pet damage, sagging seats and worn arms. Ask the house about smoke or mildew smells, which photos can't show.
- Check seams and folds on mattresses and upholstered pieces for signs of pests before anything comes inside.
How much does furniture sell for at auction?
Price follows demand more than original cost. A solid oak dresser or a well-made dining set draws steady bidding, while big formal pieces like armoires and china cabinets can sell for surprisingly little because few buyers have room for them. Sofas and mattresses tend to sell low because buyers are wary of wear.
Work out your total before you bid. On a $250 dining table with a 15% buyer's premium and 8.25% sales tax, you pay $311.22 before any moving costs. Auktia can show that all-in number on every item (lot) as bidding moves.
How do you pick up furniture from an auction?
Most furniture sales are pickup only, with set pickup times and a remove-by date on the sale page. Many houses don't load for you, so bring a second person, moving blankets, straps and a dolly.
Measure the piece, your vehicle, your doorways and your stairs before you bid. A sofa that doesn't fit your SUV becomes a rental truck, and that cost belongs in your max bid. See what to bring to pickup.
Questions people ask
Is it worth buying furniture at auction?
Often, yes, especially for solid wood and office pieces that sell well below new. It's less of a sure thing on upholstered items, where hidden wear and smells are hard to judge from photos.
Can I see the furniture before I bid?
Many sales list a preview time when you can inspect lots in person. If there's no preview, ask the auction house for more photos or measurements before the lot closes.
Do furniture auctions deliver?
Some lots ship, and some houses can suggest local movers, but most furniture is pickup only. Check each lot's shipping note and the pickup details on the sale page before bidding.
What if the dresser doesn't fit in my car?
You still owe for it, so plan transport before you bid. Rent a truck or book a mover for the pickup window, and count that cost in your maximum bid.
What happens if I miss the pickup deadline?
Terms vary by house, but unclaimed lots can be treated as abandoned and the invoice may still be due. Read the sale's terms and contact the house early if you need more time.
